Singing Voice Pedagogy Tutorial

This is a video of an invited presentation at the Voice Foundation's Annual Symposium in 2016. The presentation is an attempt to explain the basics of pedagogy of vocal technique with a scientific perspective. Though the approach is basic, a certain amount of background in singing terminology will be helpful. There are some useful definitions of singing terms. The discussion of the difference in singing technique between CCM (Contemporary Commercial Music) and classical singing is helpful. A few caveats: 1) The explanations of register are cursory (admitted by author) and the demonstration of register differences are not as clear as they could be, because the two registers were produced in two different octaves. 2) In discussing what a singer can control, the author forgot "duration," as one of the characteristics of sounds. Also, vowel is actually a product of resonance, aka timbre, which is considered one of the characteristics of sound. However, the author is correct that when discussing singing, vowel is an important consideration in pedagogy. 3) Finally, be aware that the discussion of psychology in singing is very brief, and has fewer scientifically based citations. Still, this provides a good basic introduction to vocal pedagogy.
