Neurological Problems of the Voice

by Blake Simpson, Gayle Woodson
Neurological voice disorders are due to abnormalities of the brain and/or the nerves of the body that impair control of the muscles. The more common neurological diseases discussed are strokes, Parkinson's, spasmodic dysphonia, benign essential tremor, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, myasthenia gravis and multiple sclerosis.

    Editor's Review
Excellent overview of neurological voice problems. Speech pathologists will note that the article minimizes the important role that voice therapy can play in optimizing adaptive compensation for a variety of neurological voice problems. Also, the perspective that voice therapy is “…ultimately ineffective” for Spasmodic Dysphonia is simplified; most experts now consider speech therapy to be an important adjunct therapy.
