Dr. Mitchell Hutchings, baritone www.mitchellhutchings.com
Dr. Mitchell Hutchings, baritone, has performed throughout the United States and internationally with companies including Utah Festival Opera & Musical Theatre, Opera Saratoga, Pensacola Opera, Charlottesville Opera, and Ensemble San Felice (Italy). His operatic roles include Gianni Schicchi, John Proctor (The Crucible), Michele (Il tabarro), Marcello and Schaunard (La bohème), Escamillo (Carmen), Ben (The Telephone), and the title role in Sweeney Todd, directed by Tony Award nominee Terrence Mann. His portrayal of Sweeney Todd was noted for its commanding stage presence and vocal range.
Concert appearances include Handel’s Messiah with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra at Our Lady of Victory Basilica, Brahms’ Ein deutsches Requiem with the Rochester Oratorio Society, and Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Choral Fantasy, and Mass in C at venues including Carnegie Hall.
A Voting Member of the Recording Academy®, Dr. Hutchings contributed as a producer to the classical albums Cobalt, Jade, Amethyst ♀, and d’Arc, which earned three Global Music Awards for Outstanding Achievement. He served as vocal producer, arranger, and conductor on Chris Redding’s Visions of Sounds De Luxe, which received a GRAMMY® nomination and the World Entertainment Award for Best R&B Album.
His interdisciplinary work includes participation in Opera Hack 3.0, a project by San Diego Opera supported by an OPERA America Innovation Grant, and Music Theatre and New Technologies (MTNT), a €5.28 million initiative funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research and the European Union. MTNT brings together European and American institutions to explore the intersection of opera and emerging technologies in performance and education.
A dedicated voice pedagogue, Dr. Hutchings has been featured in CS Music (Classical Singer), Schmopera, and Modern Singer. He was selected for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Intern Program in 2018 and has served as a guest artist and clinician for Opera Orlando, L’Ateneo Internazionale della Lirica di Sulmona (Italy), and Universidad Autónoma de Chihuahua (Mexico). He currently serves as President of the NATS South Florida Chapter, Artistic Director of FAU Opera Theatre, and Founder and Program Faculty Leader of FAU Opera in Italy. In 2024, he received the Florida Atlantic University Faculty Talon Leadership Award, given annually to one faculty member for exceptional leadership and service to the university.
Students from his studio have performed with Washington National Opera, the National Symphony Orchestra, Palm Beach Opera, Glimmerglass Festival, Croatian National Theatre, Pittsburgh Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Seagle Festival, Ohio Light Opera, and others. They have been finalists or prizewinners in the NATS Student Auditions, Premiere Opera International Vocal Competition, and the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition. Former students have earned scholarships and admission to institutions such as Yale University, Eastman School of Music, Florida State University, Mannes School of Music, Peabody Institute, Boston University, and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. One former student was selected to participate in the Joyce DiDonato Master Class Series at Carnegie Hall.
In the commercial music sphere, artists who have collaborated with Dr. Hutchings have received international recognition, toured globally, reached as high as #2 on the iTunes Worldwide Album Chart, and been featured in Rolling Stone.
Dr. Hutchings holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Performance and Literature from the Eastman School of Music, a Master of Music in Vocal Performance from Florida State University, and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance from Western Carolina University. He resides in South Florida with his spouse, composer and stage director Dr. Sarah Hutchings.
