Bio:
A native of Denver, Colorado, tenor Jonathan Hodel has appeared in opera, concert and oratorio in the United States and Europe. His very diverse repertoire includes Siegfried with Valhalla Productions, Les Contes D'Hoffmann, Un Ballo in Maschera, Il Tabarro, I Pagliacci and Die Fledermaus with Houston's Opera in the Heights, La Bohème with the Heschise-Stattstheater in Wiesbaden, Germany, Asheville Lyric Opera and St. Petersburg Opera, Il trovatore with the Compagnia d'opera italiana di Milano international tour and Monterey Symphony, Norma with South Florida Opera, Aïda with Opera Fort Collins, Madama Butterfly with Asheville Lyric Opera and Mansfield Symphony, Carmen and L’elisir d’amore with Asheville Lyric Opera and Rigoletto with Bayshore Lyric Opera and Der Fliegende Holländer (cover) and The Crucible with Opera San Jose. During his four year residency with Opera San José, Mr. Hodel was seen in Il trovatore, Faust, Madama Butterfly, Manon, Falstaff, La Bohème, Rigoletto, L'elisir d'amore, Eugene Onegin, La Traviata, Carmen and even Il Barbiere di Siviglia. While a member of the Pittsburgh Opera Center, he sang Un Giorno di Regno and the world premier of Buoso's Ghost, and at Indiana University, he sang in the third production ever of The Ghosts of Versailles. As soloist, Mr. Hodel has performed Mendelssohn's Lobgesang and Verdi's Requiem with the Reutlingen Württenbergishe Philharmonie, Verdi’s Requiem with the Maryland Symphony Orchestra, the Sacramento Choral Society and the Redwood Symphony and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Boulder Philharmonic. Other concert works include Bach's Mattheus Passion (Schola Cantorum), Johannes Passion, Weihnachts Oratorium, Mass in B Minor and Magnificat, Beethoven's Choral Fantasy, Berlioz's Te Deum (Stanford University), Britten's St. Nicolas (Schola Cantorum), Handel's Messiah, Mozart's Requiem and Rachmaninov's The Bells. Lieder performances include Schubert’s Die schöne Müllerin, Die Winterreise, Beethoven’s An die ferne Geliebte, Schumann’s Dichterliebe and Cornelius's Weihnachtslieder.
Professor Hodel was a lecturer in voice at Frostburg State University where he taught Opera History, Voice Diction and Vocal Pedagogy. He also oversaw Opera workshops at Frostburg State University and San Jose State University and gave voice masterclasses at Frostburg State University, Oklahoma State University and University of North Carolina, Asheville. Mr. Hodel has conducted opera performances with Opera San Jose (Die Fledermaus), Asheville Lyric Opera (Don Giovanni, Il Barbiere di Siviglia, La Traviata and an Opera Gala with scenes from Susannah and The Tales of Hoffmann), Empire Lyric Players (Mikado) and Frostburg State University (Die Fledermaus, Hansel and Gretel, Amahl and the Night Visitors and The Magic Flute). Mr. Hodel was a long time student of the great bass Giorgio Tozzi and has attended masterclasses with Siegfried Jerusalem, Evelyn Leer, Thomas Stewart, Sheryl Milnes, Luigi Alva, Renata Scotto and has coached with Lorenzo Malfatti, Rudolph Pierney, David Adams and Leonard Hokanson. Dr. Hodel has DM and MM in voice from Indiana University and MA in choral conducting from The University of Iowa.
