Cherilyn was on the faculty at the prestigious Orange County School of the Arts Musical Theatre Conservatory and with Brigham Young University’s Music-Dance-Theatre Department, rated #6 nationally, receiving highest student reviews. Several of her students have become professional singers, performed on Broadway and throughout the world. Recently a student prevailed through four rounds of NBC's The Voice. She sang and recorded for six years with the nationally acclaimed Millennial Choirs and Orchestras under the direction of Brett and Brandon Stewart in Utah and California, performing in Carnegie Hall and multiple times at Segerstrom Concert Hall and Abravanel Hall. Cherilyn was born and raised in Hollywood, California, studied 4 years with Metropolitan Opera singer Margaret Romaine, and earned her B.A. in Speech and Drama from BYU. She also studied with noted teachers in major markets and combines the best of their techniques in her private voice studio: Norman Gulbrandsen (nationally recognized NATS teacher, father-in-law; Northwestern University); Anne Jackson and Ray Allen (Dallas Summer Musicals); Sheilah Vaughn Walker (Broadway Musical Director – Ragtime, Fiddler); Bill Reed, a protégé of the legendary Oren Brown (NYC), whose technique she uses to safely develop voices with healing voice therapies and vocalises; Ewan Mitton (Utah). Cherilyn teaches voice technique and coaches song interpretation across the classical, Broadway legit, belt, pop and character styles, along with audition skills and prep, musical theatre repertoire, recording studio/mic techniques and the art of the cabaret performance. Her NYC mentor and award-winning Cabaret director Sara Louise Lazarus has given Cherilyn exclusive rights to teach David Craig’s On Singing Onstage course, integrating his highly effective principles for both audition prep and performance. She frequently teams up with guest artists to present masterclasses for her students, such as Michael Orland (American Idol), Sheilah Vaughn Walker (Broadway music director), Jerry Williams (Donny & Marie music director) and upcoming Mike Garson (David Bowie music director). She also continues to manage and direct her exclusive Singers on Stage NYC summer intensives by maintaining the integrity of that first-of-its-kind model. She has avoided the flashy, dime-a-dozen money-making, cookie-cutter versions that have followed by limiting the number of aspiring artists who attend and by selecting faculty based on expertise, not "wow-factor" celebrities. The limited sized classes and the 80+ hours spent together over a 12 day time-frame allow an environment conducive to developing real relationships between aspiring actor-singers and NYC professionals who are able to provide on-going guidance and connections. If you or your students (age 14-adult) would like to attend the next summer intensive, contact Cherilyn.
