Lyric coloratura soprano Mary Johnston Letellier brings her warm, expressive voice and strong dramatic instincts to a wide variety of repertoire.
Last year, Ms. Letellier appeared as Violetta in Mass Opera’s production of La Traviata. Recently, Ms. Letellier covered the role of First Lady in Die Zauberflöte with Opera Maine, and served as the treble section leader in their production of Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer. This past Spring, Ms. Letellier originated the role of Conrad/Conradine in the new musical The Secret Princess at Snowlion Repertory Theatre, where she also created the role of the Narrator in the premiere of Mesmerized. A sought after concert performer, Ms. Letellier has recently been a featured soloist in programs with Assabet Valley Mastersingers, Lyric Music Theater, Opera Maine, Port City Blue, Good Theater, Biddeford City Theater, and others. Ms. Letellier is also an accomplished voice teacher and pedagogue, working with students of all ages and levels to develop cohesive, healthy, and beautiful voices. She is passionate about creating an inclusive learning environment for students of all backgrounds, gender identities, and physical abilities. She is currently a member of the voice faculty at University of Southern Maine and the Portland Conservatory of Music, where she is also the Director of the Opera Workshop, is Teaching Artist at 317 Maine Community Music Center, and runs the York Country Regional Fine Arts Vocal Program. In 2013, Ms. Letellier founded her private vocal studio, MJL Voice Studio, which has since grown to 50+ students. Ms. Letellier’s varied pedagogical interests have led her to develop coursework in vocal pedagogy, diction for singers, voice for instrumentalists, dramatic coaching, technology for singers, basic music theory, and accessibility in voice. This fall, Ms. Letellier started work on her Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance at New England Conservatory. She received her Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Opera Performance from the Boston Conservatory at Berklee. She serves as President of the Maine chapter of NATS and has been an invited adjudicator at NATS New England (2021) and NATS Maine (2018). She is Founder and Co-Manager of Opera on Tap: Maine, where she is also a frequent performer, and remains an active member of the Society of Pi Kappa Lambda, the American Honor Society for Music.
