Bio:

Equally comfortable and confident as a performer, teacher, adjudicator, researcher, and mentor; Baritone Matthew Cyphert is an emerging professional singer and teacher of vocal arts working in the greater Pittsburgh/Morgantown area. Mr. Cyphert currently serves as an Adjunct Lecturer of Music in the School of Music at West Virginia University. Recognized for his “beautifully rich” baritone voice, Matthew can be found performing as a recitalist, orchestral soloist, and operatic soloist across North-America. Performing credits span over 8 years of singing engagements from the east coast to the Colorado mountains, and selected roles performed include; Papageno, Armored Guard 2, and Priest 2 in The Magic Flute, John Sorel in The Consul, Top in The Tender Land, Boy no. 2 in Trouble in Tahiti, Don Alfonso in Cosi Fan Tutte, the Superintendent in Albert Herring, and Count Carl-Magnus in A Little Night Music.

In addition to his performing, Mr. Cyphert takes great pride in his teaching career. A member of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Matthew has quickly become known for his teaching abilities through the progress displayed by his many students in recital and contest. Fully comfortable teaching in all vocal styles, Mr. Cyphert has experience teaching classical, folk, jazz, musical theater, gospel, and pop styles of singing, all while incorporating ‘Bel canto’ technique into all vocal teaching practices. When not performing or teaching, Mr. Cyphert can often be found acting as a guest adjudicator for vocal competitions or acting as guest masterclass clinician. Before coming to West Virginia University, Matthew served as an instructor of applied voice and voice classes in the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance at Kansas State University. Dr. Cyphert received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Vocal Performance with a Piano Minor from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Music in Vocal Performance degree from Kansas State University, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Vocal Performance and Literature at West Virginia University in 2022. Major voice and piano professors include; Dr. Sarah Mantel, Dr. Mary Logan-Hastings, Dr. Reginald Pittman, Dr. William Koehler, Dr. Jacob Ertl, and Dr. Henry Wong-Doe.
