Bio:

Dave Ekstrum, a native of East Texas studied music theory and composition at Ouachita Baptist University (B.M.) and Baylor University before making the transition from baritone to tenor and becoming a professional singer. Early professional chorus work at Houston Grand Opera and New York City Opera led to solo engagements at the Caramoor Festival, Sarasota Opera, Opera in the Heights and Cincinnati Opera. Roles performed include Siegumnd (Die Walküre), Samson (Samson et Dalila), Pollione (Norma), Florestan (Fidelio), Macduff (Macbeth), Canio (I Pagliacci) and Zorn (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg).

He received his M.M. in vocal performance from Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music where he studied with William McGraw and performed the title role in Idomeneo. He earned a D.M.A. from University of North Texas where he studied voice with Jeffrey Snider and vocal pedagogy with Stephen Austin. Oratorio performances have included Handel’s Messiah, Puccini’s Messa da Gloria, Dvořák’s Requiem, Mendelssohn’s Christus, and Schumann’s Das Pardies und die Peri. Dr. Ekstrum was a winner in the Annual Liederkranz Competition (Wagner Division) and a scholarship recipient from the New York Wagner Society. His voice teachers have included Jeffrey Snider, William McGraw, Mark Oswald, Patricia Sheridan, Lois Alba, and Joyce Farwell.

Dr. Ekstrum currently teaches voice at San Jacinto College in Pasadena, Texas.
