Bio:
John Hines, bass vocalist, has been heard from the concert and opera stages of Italy, Austria, Russia, and the United States. In March 2013, Hines celebrated his Carnegie Hall debut as bass soloist in Haydn’s “Lord Nelson” Mass. Since 2007, his many performances in the Russian Federation – most notably those of Russian vocal music – have earned him the title “The American Chaliapin” by Russian critics and audiences, and a seat on the international panel of jurors for the Boris T. Shtokolov International Vocal Competition in St. Petersburg, Russia since 2008. Hines has also appeared in performance with artists from the Mariinsky, Bolshoi, and Kiev Theaters, and has had many of his performances broadcast over Russian Federal Television and Radio. In addition to programs of Russian music, Hines has also performed works by traditional Western composers, most notably Franz Schubert’s song-cycle Winterreise at the St. Petersburg State Academic Capella in 2009 – the last artist to perform this work in the Capella since the late Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau 60 years prior. In 2010, in celebration of the 200th anniversary of the birth of Robert Schumann, Hines returned as the bass soloist in Schumann’s rarely performed Requiem mass with the State Academic Capella Chorus and Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Alexander Chernushenko. In 2012, Hines was a featured solo artist on the Northern Iowa Wind Symphony anniversary tour of Northern Italy performing in Milan, Brescia, Bergamo, Pontevico, and Costa Volpino. Each year – in addition to numerous faculty performances at the University of Northern Iowa where he is an Associate Professor of Music – Hines appears as guest recitalist and master class clinician at colleges and universities throughout the U.S., and as soloist in oratorio and concert performances with regional orchestras and choral societies. Recent highlights include: 2014, Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem with the Central Wisconsin Symphony; 2013, opera gala performance in featured arias and duets from Verdi’s Aïda and Mozart’s Die Zauberflӧte and Die Entführung aus dem Serail with the University of Missouri Choral Union and Columbia Civic Orchestra; Haydn’s “Lord Nelson” Mass with the Knox College Choir and Monmouth Chorale in Galesburg, Illinois; and, recitals and master classes at the University of Iowa, Austin Peay State, and Tennessee State Universities. Hines has also appeared as soloist in Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9with the Southeast Iowa Symphony; Dvořák’s Stabat Mater with the First Religious Society Orchestra and Chorus of Newburyport, Massachusetts; Haydn’s Creationwith the Michigan State University Choral Union and Lansing Symphony; Handel’sMessiah, J.S. Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 and Piano Fantasy with the Grand Rapids Symphony – the later work performed in collaboration with the International Gilmore Keyboard Festival; and, numerous works with the Metropolitan Chorale of Waterloo, Iowa including Beethoven’s Piano Fantasy and Mass in C, Haydn’s “Lord Nelson” Mass, J.S. Bach Cantata BWV 214 “Tӧnet ihr Pauken erschallet, Trompeten!”, Handel’s Messiah, and Brahms’s Ein deutsches Requiem.
As an operatic performer Hines enjoys an extensive and diverse repertory. Highlights include: Sarastro (Die Zauberflӧte), and excerpts as Wotan and Hunding (Das Rheingold, Die Walküre ) with the Northern Iowa Opera Theater; Sarastro (Die Zauberflӧte) and Bonze (Madame Butterfly) with the Cedar Rapids Opera Theater; Mandarin (Turandot) with Opera Grand Rapids (Michigan); Scarpia (Tosca) with the Asheville Lyric Opera; Fritz Kothner (Die Meistersinger) with the Cleveland Opera; and, the title role (Mikado) and Police Sergeant (Pirates of Penzance) with the Findlay Light Opera.
Dr. Hines is originally from North Central Ohio. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Shenandoah University Conservatory of Music, Master of Music degree from Kent State University, and Bachelor of Music in Education degree from Heidelberg University. He also studied at Indiana University and the American Institute of Music Studies in Graz, Austria. His principal voice teachers were Bard Suverkrop, James Mismas, Dale Moore, Carlos Montané, and Norman Wurgler, and he has worked privately or in master classes with James King, Giorgio Tozzi, Italo Tajo, Nico Castel, John Wustman, Andrew White, and Shirlee Emmons.
Prior to joining the University of Northern Iowa music faculty in 2006, Hines served on the music faculties of Cornerstone, Taylor, Indiana Wesleyan, Ball State and Pittsburg State Universities respectively. He is an active member of NATS, a sought-after master class clinician and competition adjudicator, and his students have been accepted into prestigious universities and conservatories as well as chosen to participate in the Merola, Houston, Central City, Wolf Trap, Central City and Chautauqua Young Artist Programs.
In his pastime he enjoys golfing, swimming, gardening, woodworking, and traveling with his family. Dr. Hines resides in Cedar Falls with his wife and two children.
