Bio:
Soprano Joyce Hall Wolf is a frequent performer of recital, opera, and oratorio. She has performed numerous operatic roles in works ranging from those by Monteverdi to Menotti. Wolf collaborates with Kentucky Ballet Theatre for whom she has sung George Crumb’s Ancient Voices of Children and Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brazileiras Number 5. Wolf is a member of the Eastern Kentucky University School of Music and Honors Program Faculties. As a promoter and researcher of compositions by women, Wolf teaches Women in Music for the Honors Program and Women and Gender Studies. Wolf is a national presenter on the subject of Women Lieder Composers (National Collegiate Honors Council Conference 2008; Festival of Women Composers – IUP 2010) and the lieder of Alma Mahler-Werfel (Women in the Arts Conference – University of Illinois St. Louis 2005; the National Association of Teachers of Singing International Conference 2006). She has also presented nationally and regionally on the subject of Guiding the Undergraduate through Critical and Creative Thinking and into Dynamic Art Song Performance (National Association of Teachers of Singing International Conference 2008); Lilly Conference on Teaching and Learning 2008; Kentucky Conference on Scholarship of Teaching and Learning 2010. Additional national presentations include Preparing the Pedagogue! (National Association of Teachers of Singing International Conference 2016), I Will Sing You a Song: The Art Songs of Jocelyn Hagan (Athena Festival 2009; Women in the Arts Conference – University of Illinois St. Louis 2011). She was a presenter at the National Collegiate Honors Council Conference (2007) with the lecture recital Tension, Society, and Art Song – Critical Response and Creative Journey.
As Professor of Music at Eastern Kentucky University, Wolf teaches voice, vocal pedagogy, and vocal repertoire. Her students come from diverse majors within the music area. She teaches Vocal Performance Majors, Music Education Majors, Theory and Composition Majors, and Music Industry Majors. She is a member of the faculty of Foster Academy for Musical Excellence and the faculty of Foster Music Camp for high school students. Wolf holds the Doctorate of Musical Arts Degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Kentucky with a minor in Music History. Mentors at the University of Kentucky included Baritone Steven King and Dr. Jonathan Glixon. She also earned the Master of Music in Applied Voice and Bachelor of Music in Music Education degrees from West Virginia University with mentors Soprano Frances Yeend, James Benner, and Dr. Harry Elzinga. Wolf’s former students are active as performers and teachers.
