Job Description / Duties

The Department of Music at Georgia Southern University seeks a Visiting Instructor/Visiting Assistant Professor of Voice for the 2020-2021 academic year. This position is located primarily on the Statesboro campus.

At Georgia Southern, visiting instructors/visiting assistant professors normally teach fifteen credit hours per semester and hold regular office hours. All visiting positions are non-tenure track. The appointment is for Fall 2020 – Spring 2021 with the possibility of a one-year extension pending funding and satisfactory performance. The extension year would be a terminal year, without exceptions.

Position Description. Reporting to the Chair of the Department of Music, the Visiting Instructor/Visiting Assistant Professor of Voice requires 1) teaching applied voice lessons (undergraduate and graduate), voice studio, and/or other related courses (which may include class voice, diction, opera theatre, pedagogy, and vocal literature); 2) actively recruiting potential music majors; 3) attending area and department meetings; 4) serving on juries; and 5) other teaching duties as assigned by the Chair, based on the candidate’s strengths and departmental needs. This position is an academic (9/10 month) year, non-tenure-track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Qualifications / Required Skills


Required Qualifications:
• Earned master’s degree in Vocal Performance or a closely related field by August 1, 2020 (for visiting instructor rank) or earned doctoral degree in Vocal Performance or a closely related field by August 1, 2020 (for visiting assistant professor rank)
• Evidence of successful voice teaching in a variety of styles
• Strong technical and musical skills as a performer
• Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives
• Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development
• Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution

Preferred Qualifications:
• College-level teaching experience
• Experience directing opera or teaching voice pedagogy
