Job Description / Duties

Augustana College, Rock Island, Illinois, invites applications for an assistant professor tenure track position in voice and opera beginning in August of the 2023-2024 academic year. Tenor, baritone, and bass candidates are preferred.


The successful candidate will teach 24 credits per 10-month academic year, including directing productions for our opera ensemble, applied voice lessons, and other courses in music and/or the college’s first-year liberal studies program depending on background and interests (standard courses are 4 credits).

Qualifications / Required Skills

Successful candidates will hold a doctoral degree (ABD considered) in voice or a related field, and be able to demonstrate teaching effectiveness, performance excellence, and a commitment to fostering equity and inclusion. Candidates will be evaluated on their abilities to (a) successfully lead OperX Ensemble, including creatively imagining opportunities for recruitment and program growth, and to provide outstanding musical direction for productions in the musical theatre area, (b) exhibit excellence in teaching applied voice in a variety of styles and genres, and a willingness to develop a broad pedagogy of voice in line with the mission of the vocal area, (c) show exceptionally high musicianship as a solo performer in the areas of opera and musical theatre, (d) have the skills necessary to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion, including the ability to recognize the gifts and needs of all students and a desire to build relationships across diverse campus and community groups as informed by the mission of the college, (e) demonstrate a collaborative spirit with colleagues and students and strengths in interpersonal communication and problem-solving, and (f) have a proven track record of professional performing experience beyond academic institutions, with clear potential for future success in performance. Tenor, baritone, and bass candidates are preferred.
